Lips Rings are worn in a type of body piercing that is placed on or around the lips, and these piercings can be performed in a varity of ways. Lip Rings are often worn in pairs or sets of three or more either all on the same lip or on opposing lips.
Healing times for lip piercings vary between 3 and 4 weeks. It takes this long to develop scar tissue, but the fistula (inside of the piercing) is ussually completely developed and the piercing is healed. Lip Piercing aftercare includes saline soaks two or three times daily. Soak the piercing for three to five minutes at a time with a weak saline solution. This will soften any blood and lymph discharge that has developed on the jewelry. Then use a cotton swab or a q-tip to remove any excess matter from around the piercing. After the lip ring has been completely cleaned off, then you should slowly turn the lip ring through the lip piercing and again rinse with saline solution to rinse out the inside of the piercing and eliminate any matter remaining inside and around the outside of the piercing. Mouth rinse (alcohol free) can be used to rinse after eating to remove food and rinse the lip piercing and this is recommended by some doctors.
Lip piercings are initially pierced with lip rings like labret studs or a captive bead ring, which are made out of high quality 316L surgical stainless steel. Other materials that can be used include implant grade titanium, or other hypoallergenic metals. Regardless of the material that is used on the initial lip piercing, the size (diameter or length) will be oversized to allow for the initial swelling which is expected as a result of the piercing. After the lip piercing heals, the jewelry used for the initial piercing can be replaced with a smaller, closer fitting lip ring for comfort and visual appearance. More info>>
