About Body Jewelry

gold belly ring titanium circular barbell prong set gem nose stud screw titanium slave barbell tongue ring
Body Jewelry is jewelry made of 316L Surgical Steel, Titanium, Gold, Acrylic, Bone, Horn, Wood, Stone, or any non-alergenic material that is designed to be placed under the skin for the purpose of adorning various parts of the body. Body Piercing is the art of puncturing the skin or a part of the human body and creating a hole in which body jewelry can be worn. Body piercing is a form of body art known as body modification. The word "piercing" can refer to the act or practice of creating holes in the flesh for the purpose of wearing body jewelry, or it can be used in refference to the actual hole its self. The history of body jewelry dates back thousands of years. Body piercing and the wearing of body jewelry has been practiced in many different forms begining in ancient times throughout the whole world.

In modern culture, body piercing and the wearing of body jewelry has become more popular since the 1940's, as the piercing of other parts of the body among subcultures has become more popular in the 70's and quickly spreading to mainstream culture in the 1990's.

Body Jewelry used for internal body piercings are made of hypoallergenic materials. 316L Surgical stainless steel, niobium and titanium are all commonly used metals in the manufacture of body jewelry. Of these three metals, titanium is the least likely to cause allergic reactions. Platinum and palladium can also be used as safe alternatives, even when placed into fresh body piercings. Gold of any grade should never be used in fresh body piercings, because gold is mixed with other metals when it is made. Sterling silver is not a good material to use for body jewelry regardless of how old the piercing is becasue it will likely cause allergies in fresh piercings and silver will tarnish in any body piercing. An additional risk for allergic reaction may arise when the post, ring, stud or clasp of body jewelry is made from a different metal than the primary piece of the body jewelry. More info>>
